Jason Wu for Target: fit problems & quality issues

Now that "Wu mania" has died down a bit, I notice that my local Target stores are slowing being replenished with inventory, assumingly from customer returns. I'm not surprised, as the sizing on the Jason Wu for Target line is all over the map. In general, it's running larger than previous Target designer-collabs. But I've also found inconsistencies within the same size. Case in point: I bought this blouse in red (far left) and loved it so much that I ordered the same one in gold (in the same size). However, the gold one fits totally different than the red one, and seems to be running a full size smaller than the red. Same thing with the t-shirts I've ordered: I got the gray lace tee in a size Small at the store, then ordered the Milu cat tee in a Medium (as that's the smallest size they had left) and found that it fit exactly the same. The size Medium Striped tee I ordered, on the other hand, runs bigger than both of them, and seems to fit more like a Large.

And regarding quality: my fellow blogger The Recessionista reported last week about issues like rips and tears on the more delicate blouses. I've noticed several complaints about quality on Target.com as well.

What about you, readers? Any fit or quality woes with Wu?

I have the navy shirt with polka dots, and I was trying it on. When I was taking it off, one of the snaps just popped off entirely! Not even sure how to fix it because there's nothing to sew :(

How are the bags? I love the Milu tote but...

Bev: I would return the top and get your $$ back. A snap can be fixed, but you'll have to take it to a tailor...which will cost more $, and I'm not sure they'll be able to "save" the original snap.

And Amy: I got the striped tote (Milu was all sold out) and the quality seems fine. But really, it's JUST a canvas bag - nothing special. And, not worth $40, IMO. Therefore, I'll be returning it.

I returned ALL of mine, it was as you say all over the map. Must've been sourced to different manufacturers in Asia that's I can figure.

I'd still like to get my Mom the cat scarf, but I refuse to pay the ebayers! :)

I got smalls in both the shirts that I got and I'm usually a medium. But both shirts fit me really well. The blue mesh/flower tank top fits nicely. The only problem I had with the pink and white polka dot short sleeve blouse was that the arms were (still are) pretty tight. I'm still happy though.

I actualy found one of the bow-tie blouses in a store in my size. But the quality of the fabrice was so nasty I didn't even try it on. Also, it was a cream blouse, but the bow-tie neck on it was black and white. It was mismatched, and the general impression I got was lack of attention to detail. Very disappointing. After the Liberty of London and Mizzoni, I expected better.

The flower print bags at one of my stores ( haven't been to the other yet) all had slightly crooked clasps. Not horribly noticeable but still not acceptable and a sign of an obvious quality control issue. I was contemplating getting one but didn't want to pay that price for a less than perfect item.

One of the items I'm seeing a LOT of returns of (in several stores) is the striped t-shirt dress... probably due to the super-thin fabric and because it runs oversize.

The navy shirt with polka dots fits very small. I wear a L to XL generally and the large didn't fit at all, not even close (unless it was mislabeled as a Large) and I didn't try on the XL.

The black dress with nude belt is a little tight in the bust. I normally wear a 14 dress, but even the 16 was too tight in the bust (but this dress is gorgeous).

I haven't noticed any quality issues, except for the red and navy striped top where some of the stitching was off on one of the sleeves and the material at the end of the sleeves was fraying a bit. Other than that, all the pieces at the Target I went to were in good condition as far as I saw.

Amy asked about the bags; I only saw one bag, the one with the light blue stripes. It looked very well made. I decided not to buy it because of the light colored background. I was afraid with daily use the bag would become dirty quickly.

So far I'm keeping the gold textured peplum top, red cardigan, navy & red striped top, navy & red striped dress (the rayon one - I don't think it's see through, but need to check it out in better light), black cycle dress with pearls and the sleeveless flowered dress with the belt.

The sizing really surprised me. Even in XS, several things were drastically too big for me. I'm already hearing multiple horror stories of items shrinking and fading with a single wash, top ripping within minutes, seams twisting in odd ways... I ended up with all three cat items plus the belted floral dress, and I'm going to be nervous simply wearing them. :/

I hand wash and hang dry anything I think won't stand up in the wash. I think what I have will hold up when hand washed. I looked at Jason Wu's regular collection and can definitely see the resemblance. He's only 29 years old, he has years and years ahead of him and is already a star designer. Let's see a Jason Wu for Target collection in another 40 years!
