Update on Target's Earth Day bag giveaway...

As I reported several days ago, in celebration of Earth Day (which is actually tomorrow) Target will give out 1.5 million re-usable bags in stores today, April 21st.  However it sounds like it won't pay to get there early.  Most (if not all) Target stores should open at 8am today, but this notice (shown) in their Weekly Ad states that they won't be giving out the bags until 10am.  I have NO idea why they're waiting until 10, unless they need time to stuff some of them with the "freebies" from Method, Annie's, Burt's Bees, etc.

I was there around noon. No freebies, but I did get a coupon booklet.

Readers: I went to Target around 9:15 this morning. I didn't see them giving out bags (again, this was before 10am) so I asked about them at the CS desk. The clerk laughed and said "yeah, here you go - they're smaller this year, but there's a few samples in there.". So just like the bag I got last year, it was about the size of a lunch bag (not a grocery bag) and there were only 4 tiny samples in there! [plus the coupon booklet Amber mentioned above]. So don't worry if you didn't get one, b/c you didn't miss out on anything!

Exactly! It's cute, I guess. I'll toss it in with my bigger bags. Sure I'm whining now, but I'm sure it'll come in handy. :)

yup bag is tiny and no freebies, just a coupon book, but if you went later in the day you did not get a coupon book.

Tiny bag, the freebies were of no interest to me. Cute tho, for picking up a prescription or a few cosmetics. At my Target where everyone knows me...hubby usually goes with me, and we each get a bag. The new girl wouldn't give me one for my Hub since he wasn't there. Yet I sat at the Starbucks and watched a couple with FIVE children...three of them who were toddlers, each get bags. Yes, it was one per "person"...but it irked me just a wee bit. Usually small children are not included in giveaways. Then the next couple who came up, she gave only the lady one, not the man. The lady complained to me when she walked by, that they each should have gotten one. So it wasn't consistent. But when I checked out, the person who knew me, gave me one for the Hubster, so I did get two.

I worked this event in IL... Its not target employees, we are brand ambassadors hired from outside marketing companies. The event was not supposed to start until ten and Target employees were instructed not to touch the boxes at all. There were 140 prestuffed bags with samples. After that I had 800 bags and coupons books to pass out. There's no way your store should have ran out.at the end of my shift, I left about 400 there for them to give out or keep. We were specifically instructed not to give bags to children. I had no problem giving one per person though. I ran out of samples in the first hour though. $44 worth of coupons and a free bag isn't exactly something I would complain about getting though.....just a little inside perspective.

Nicole: thanks for your insights and for clarifying that Target hires outside workers to hand out these bags.

And you're right: we shouldn't be complaining about anything we get for free :-) Although it is disappointing that the bags used to be "full size" (which are more useful for shopping trips) and now have shrunk to lunchbag size.

Does anyone know how many years Target has been giving out the bags? My adventures in getting this years was way more complicated than it should have been... but I wanted that bag!
