Target Moving from Paper to Plastic...

Yesterday I visited a Target store several towns over (that I don't normally go to) and they handed me my purchase in this plastic bag (shown here). I asked the clerk whether they were phasing out the current paper grocery-style bags for these new plastic ones, and she frowned "yes" (as if she didn't approve). For clerks, I can understand the frustration, as these new bags don't sit "upright" like the paper bags did, making them harder to load. I'm not sure if this is a "California thing" or whether it's a nationwide initiative, but once I got home, I found this description printed near the bottom edge of the bag:

This Everlasting Bag is designed for at least 125 uses. This bag is made from Low Density Polyethylene with a minimum thickness of 2.25 mil. It contains at least 80% Post-Consumer Recycled material and can be recycled at a participating store. This bag is ordinance compliant and does not contain lead, cadmium, or any other metals in toxic amounts. To clean, rinse bag with liquid dish soap on inside of the bag and hang upside down to dry. This bag is made in Germany by Papier-Mettler and distributed by Mettler Packaging LLC.

While I applaud Target for their efforts to "go green", I personally will miss the paper bags as I used them all the time for my kitchen recycling - filling them up before hauling them out to the side yard recycling bins. And while Target's intent (125 uses!) is great, I wonder how many people will actually re-use these bags - ?

Our Target has never had paper bags?? Only white plastic ones with the bullseye - but no handles, just the two holes to carry it.
The bags you show here would be an improvement at our store!

Suzy: that's interesting! I guess Target's "bag policy" varies per state (and even county) per local laws and ordinances.

Yup i'm with Suzy, i live in NY and have never seen paper bags you described. These plastic ones are much nicer looking than the grocery bag ones we have.

I'm in Colorado Springs and like Suzy and BrooklynKat I've never seen paper bags at Target or any store in the city for that matter. Just your typical plastic bags sometimes referred to as "t-shirt bags". So those new plastic bags would definitely be an upgrade. But I also have a reusable cloth bag from Target that they give out free on earth day.

Interesting. I'm in Austin, Tx. We have had a plastic bag ban for several years now. So I think it will vary by state. I've always liked the paper bags with handles, and use them over and over. A big improvement on the flimsy single use bags. Since I shop at several Targets, and one county over from mine, they still use plastic ones, I get to recycle both kinds. The plastic ones fit my little waste basket perfectly. Also, since the bag ban, most retailers use paper ones with handles. Some stores charge a dime for them, some do not. Most people here have gotten used to the ban and carry their own cloth or heavy plastic ones. I do have quite a few decorated Target ones that have been giveaways over the years.

I'm in VA and our Target doesn't have paper bags that I know of - just cheap white plastic ones printed with the Bullseye logo that are similar to what we also have at Wal-Mart and grocery stores. I agree with Barbara though, they are great waste basket liners for the office! Our store sells cloth bags but I've never seen anyone using them in the store.

They are exceptionally assorted in view of their distinctive purposes - thick to convey overwhelming plastic bags amazon, thin to cover launder apparel on a holder, and normal for the market.
