Walmart's plan to "crush the competition"...

Normally I don't like to give air time to the competition, but I saw this Time article on Yahoo today and thought I'd share it. It's a fascinating look at Walmart's "Project Impact": their massive store and strategy remodeling effort. And while they won't fess up to targeting specific competitors ("We're just listening to what our customers want," states a Walmart spokesperson) you can't help but envision a Target store when you hear how they describe their new floorplan. For instance: their new "party-supply section" will contain party favors, wedding decorations, cards and scrapbooks are all in one area, whereas in the past, these products would be in three different places. Wow, what a concept, Walmart!

competition is good. I welcome it. It keeps us on our toes and brings out the best in a company.

We don't have a supertarget here, so we're almost forced to go to wally world for groceries at a cheap price. However, I really think that helps our Target, because everyone avoids walmart like the plague because of the constant long lines to checkout (3 lanes open out of 25? crazy). In fact, their recent remodeling effort has put such as bad taste in everyone's mouths, that it's going to take them a long time to recover locally.

They can remodel the stores all they want. Half the time it's the clientel people want to avoid. I mean, I've never been shoved out of the way at Target. Nor has my car ever been stolen from Target. Recently, robbers kidnapped and stole the truck of a Wal-Mart security guard. If the security guard isn't safe, what chance do the rest of us have?

BTW, love the blog.
