Target's Holiday Gift Displays: Yay or Nay?

I just realized that I haven't posted in over two weeks... chalk it up to holiday madness, I guess! While I have visited Target lately,  as the holidays grow closer and the crowds increase, I'll be avoiding the place as much as possible.

Another thing I hate (besides crowds) are these "holiday gift displays" that have popped up around Target (as shown here) smack dab in the middle of the aisles. Is it just my imagination, or are there twice as many of them this year as in years past? I get it: Target is trying to cross-sell/up-sell on "impulse" items while you shop. But these additional displays make it harder to navigate your shopping cart through the store, and honestly most of them look rather junky to me.

Whaddya think, readers? Are you a fan of these pop-up holiday displays, or are you annoyed by them (as I am)?

I should have noticed these as the amount of holiday decor seemed very small this year so other things should have popped out at me. The weekend of Thanksgiving I actually asked a stock person...there is more coming out right? He said no everything was pretty much out...noticed same thing at a few other stores...guessing they have been burned with lots of holiday items leftover and now buy less and when its gone, its gone.

My other comment is why did Target (at least mine) split up the holiday offerings between the section by the furniture and then the usual holiday section by home goods/etc? It seems to be all merchandise should be in one area...???

I don't like them. My first thought was... oh, here's a bunch of stuff that they haven't put on the shelves yet. The store is crawling with busy busy employees and carts of stuff that they ARE stocking onto shelves.

Love them or hate them (I’m truly indifferent), they’re a key part of the overall holiday merchandising strategy, and the sell-through has exceeded expectations in several key categories. I do agree that presentation is paramount and the fixtures must be straightened-up frequently. I’m anticipating their return next year.

To answer the “split merchandise/merchandising” question: the store-within-a-store concept of Wondershop goes in the traditional area of the store known as “Seasonal.” Other Home Decor lines (eg: Threshold, Project62, Opalhouse, Smith & Hawken) each have their own Holiday items that are a bit more elevated. These niche lines are better served by merchandising them away from the Wondershop concept.

Not loving them. Dropped into Target yesterday to pick up some slipper socks that were in the ad. They weren't in sleepwear where other slipper socks are. It took three employees five minutes to find them in one of the aisle kiosks across the store in front of the dog food aisle. I get what they're going for, but maybe it would work better if they also had stock of those items in the department you expect to find them in.

I completely agree!! Our Target is always a mess anyway, so this just makes it worse. I was looking for bath stuff and it was spread out over every department. Target has really fallen in the last year or so for me. The new layouts, the new cheaper quality brands...it's just not as good as it used to be.
