Target's fashion turn: I'm just not feeling it

I honestly didn't know what title to attach to this post. Regular readers of this blog know that I haven't been a big fan of Target's new fashion offerings, as cited here and in other posts in recent months. In fact, yesterday on my lunch break I wandered around the Target store near my office really trying to find something to buy, but nothing enticed me enough to even try on.

When Target carefully curates their styles, as on their TargetStyle Facebook page and in fashion posts on their corporate blog, they can encourage me to buy - like this red plaid A New Day dress that I may give a try. But for the most part, I'm just not feeling them anymore. The upside is that I'm saving a lot of money (lol!) but the downside is that I haven't found another fashion outlet to fill Target's void yet.

Maybe it's just an issue of you maturing/getting older and Target's sartorial aesthetic no longer suits who you are. While I still like some of the clothing that Target carries, at the age of 53, I'm starting to look for more classic/sophisticated pieces which Target doesn't carry; they never did, now that I think about it. So, there's that.

Evelyn: yep, that could be part of it. But I'm not even liking what Target has to offer these days. Some of the styles are similar to what they had under Merona, but the fabrications are cheaper, the color palettes are off, and the fit is different. Fit could be an issue (more juniory than before) but I always felt that Target would emulate styles from mall stores like JCrew and Banana Republic, but offer them at lower price points. But now, notsomuch.

PS: Tried on the dress in the pic today. Not only was it cheaply made (I can't tell you how thin the fabric is!) but it was also ill fitting. Way too tight in the top/bust, which made me laugh b/c I've lost 10 lbs. lately and am now 1 size lower than I used to be in Merona! The sizing on 'A New Day' is obviously Jr. sizing.

Hey, Target Addict - my attention has shifted greatly to UNIQLO. I really like the price points and the quality, and they have a lot of great basics - plus the occasional fashion forward collaboration. I have been very happy with my purchases. They even hem their pants & jeans for free. Sometimes the sizing can be a little inconsistent - so I would suggest visiting a store before tackling online options. But you should have a store somewhere nearby if you are in NorCal...?

Look for a more classical, tailored line that skews a bit more “mature” in third quarter.
So-called juniors and tween segments are a growth niche for Target, as it redefines itself as a one-stop destination for those demographics. Unfortunately, the numbers just aren’t there to denote a lot of sf to the mature/tailored markets. Men’s is trending up as well, but includes a slightly older market in the 30 - 39 segment.

JCH, thanks for the inside info! Understood that Target would want to follow the demographics/buying power, but I wonder how the junior/tween lines are doing there? Because I see a LOT of the merch ending up on the clearance racks and lagging there.

I'm starting to do more shopping at small, independently owned local boutiques. The price points are higher, but it forces me to be more selective about my purchases. Plus, I'm not looking like everyone else because I'm not wearing items found in a mall or in big-box stores.
