eBay's insane markups on Target merchandise

The New York Times published an interesting article yesterday about the insane markups (resulting in huge profits) by eBay sellers on Target's Missoni line. The article also points out similar profits garnered by other past Target designer collabs, as well as designer lines at other retailers such as Jimmy Choo for H&M. Some eBay sellers are routinely making a 300% profit on the items they resell. Case in point: this Missoni for Target bicycle, which retailed for $399.99 but has sold for as much as $1,279.95 on eBay.

I was in my local midwestern Target store yesterday in what seemed like an eternity. I was surprised to see a small rack with Missoni items left. While I admired what was there- 4 laptop sleeves, 6 eyecovers, some scarfs, gloves and x-small py type stuff, none of it was anything I needed so I left it there.

I got this email today:

hello Jennifer,
We recently contacted you about your Target.com order (ORDER #*****). As you know, due to the unprecedented demand for our Missoni for Target collection we were unable to fill some of the items in your order. We know this was disappointing and is not the experience you expect from Target. We are making improvements to better serve you in the future.
To express our apologies and appreciation for your continued support, we are sending you a $25 Target GiftCard*. This GiftCard can be used for a future purchase at either your local Target store or online at Target.com. We will mail the GiftCard to the billing address on your order and you can expect it to arrive in the next 10 business days.
Sincerely,
Target.com Guest Service

Thanks for posting about the $24 gift card. I got the same email & didn't read it through to see this bonus. I would have rather had my Missoni but the gift card is a nice gesture.
