Unlike other retail giants, Target donates unused clothing

By now, you have probably heard the widely reported and disheartening story about two retail giants - H&M and Walmart - throwing out unsold clothes instead of donating them to people in need. And going one step further, in order to prevent anyone from finding these castoffs in dumpsters and trying to keep them, both companies have gone ahead and slashed up the garments - cutting off the sleeves and such to render the items unwearable.

Now as I blogged about back in September, when Target pulls unsold clearance merchandise from their racks, it is donated to Goodwill Industries, who then re-sells it at their local stores. From Goodwill's web site: "The sales of donations help fund job training programs, employment placement services and other community-based programs for people who have disabilities, lack education or job experience, or face employment challenges."

H&M and Walmart should follow Target's example and donate their unsold items to some sort of charitable institution. It's the RIGHT thing to do, rather than waste and destroy usable clothing and shoes.

My sister goes to her Goodwill all the time and gets brand new Target clothing for her kids. I love that they do this. It's a fine example that every retailer should follow.

I always find great new-with-tags Target clothes at my local goodwill :) I was upset that I had to pay $14 for a brand new dress (with a sketchy stain) when I'm pretty sure at Target it would have been on clearance for cheaper, but I just HAD to have it :)

I totally agree. I hate to see perfectly good clothes thrown away when it could go to those in need. And think of the big fat tax break Target must get for donating stuff to Goodwill!

Just another reason why I HATE Wal-Mart (the other main reason I HATE them is because they always want to build a new store right near an endangered landscape, battlefield, or even a Mayan temple.) Those people do NOT CARE about anything but making a profit. love your Blog by the way... I'm just jealous I didn't think of it first! Long Live Target Addicts!
